Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a license to rent a bike or car?

Yes, technically: a valid national license for the right category plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Police checks on Samui roads are rare, but it's not worth the risk: in an accident, the unlicensed driver is automatically at fault — regardless of what actually happened. Your insurance will also be void if you were driving without a proper license. No license? We can help you get one on the island (this is a separate service).

What's the deposit, and do I need to leave my passport?

For short-term rentals, many shops ask to hold your passport as a deposit — that's standard practice on the island. We try to find options where a cash deposit is enough. Keep in mind: the more expensive the vehicle, the higher the deposit.

Is insurance included, and what do I do in case of an accident or breakdown?

Bikes on the island typically come without insurance; cars often include basic rental coverage — we'll confirm for your specific vehicle. Keep in mind: insurance doesn't apply if the driver had no license. If something goes wrong on the road, we'll help you reach the rental shop and walk you through the next steps.

Is a helmet required, and how often do police check?

Helmets are mandatory for both the rider and passenger — riding without one is the most common reason for being stopped at checkpoints (especially near Chaweng and Lamai). Helmets are provided by the rental shop.

Can I take the vehicle off the island?

It depends on your documents, rental period, and driving experience. Technically, a bike can be taken by ferry to nearby islands, but not always and not on every route. Let's talk through your situation before booking.

What's the minimum age and driving experience required?

Bikes are available to most tourists; for cars, rental shops generally require a minimum age of 21 and at least one year of experience. Exact requirements vary by shop — we'll clarify for you.

Can you deliver the vehicle to my hotel or the airport?

Yes, we can deliver anywhere on Koh Samui — your hotel, villa, or the airport. Alternatively, you can pick it up at a convenient location.
